Tom Tithecott has over 23 years of experience as a legal advisor to business. His professional career has included 10 years as General Counsel, senior executive and corporate director responsible for law, patent, tax and related affairs for the Canadian businesses of a prominent global Healthcare, Agri-chemicals, Chemicals & Polymers Group. Prior to that he was counsel with a global chemicals and polymers manufacturer and practiced with two prominent Toronto law firms in corporate, commercial and insolvency practice areas. As General Counsel he managed a department of 10 professionals and support staff in two cities in coordination with a complex matrix of management, law, patent and tax professionals in Europe and the United States.
Tom has practical, hands on leadership, management and counsel experience with projects as diverse as: mergers, acquisitions and divestitures; corporate name changes and reorganizations; Y2K compliance, ethics, governance and privacy systems and training; effective leveraging of scarce staff and technology resources in law departments; long term commercial arrangements; complex litigation (including competition/anti-trust, patent defense, commercial and insolvency matters); employment law; protection of sensitive intellectual property; competition/anti-trust and regulatory matters; public inquiries and commercial arbitration.
Tom has provided legal counsel, governance and risk assessment guidance and general management expertise to clients in various business sectors including pharmaceuticals, chemicals, polymers and industrial materials, biological products, manufacturing; consumer products, real estate, electronics and financial services.
Tom practices through Tithecott O’Connor LLP, which he founded in October 2004 with Brenda O’Connor. He has focused on providing interim and project corporate counsel and compliance services to a number of businesses. Recent assignments include counsel support to several leading Canadian companies including two Canadian insurance companies, a trust company, a new Canadian bank, a pharmaceutical company and a natural health supplements business.
Tom is a graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Toronto and was called to the bar in Ontario, in 1983. He studied political science and economics at Trinity College, University of Toronto prior to entering law school and has long been a member of the Canadian, American and International Bar Associations, and the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association. He has participated in several General Counsel Forums designed exclusively for Senior Legal Officers and General Counsel in Canada to meet and discuss emerging issues of common interest.
